Building on the success of last year, the program offers local students and college-aged individuals' valuable opportunities to gain hands-on experience, develop professional skills, and contribute to their community through various city departments. With a focus on fostering the next generation of leaders, the Mayor’s Summer Internship Program continues to provide an enriching platform for those interested in public service to make a difference.

Participants would work up to 25 hours per week between June – August within a city department alongside a department head or employee. The program is open to college-aged individuals who have recently graduated high school, are currently in college, in the workforce, or taking a gap year.

Interns will have the option to choose several fields they may be interested in including Public Management, Public Housing, Engineering/Urban Planning, Economic Development, Public Health, Social Services, Information Technology, Conservation and Sustainability, Recreation, Building/Construction/Code Enforcement, Human Resources, Legal and Election Management/City Records.

“It was wonderful to see students eager and excited to contribute to municipal government last year. This internship offers a unique opportunity to introduce them to a career path they may not have previously considered. By providing an insider’s view of how the city operates, students gain valuable firsthand experience. In addition, this initiative also supports projects across departments by providing additional staff through the internship program.,” said Mayor J. Christian Dumais.

Applications open Monday, April 7 and close Wednesday April 30. Participants are paid the current Massachusetts minimum wage of $15 per hour. Those who wish to apply can find the application online here: Mayor Christian’s 2025 Summer Internship Program
